I get the strong impression that this was a one-draft work. If you save it and re-open it at least a day later, you can see the text with fresher eyes and flesh out or clarify parts that aren't as great as they seemed at first.

A good start would be to pick either past tense or present tense. Flip a coin if you need to, but take one and stick to it.
