What kind of brush did you use to get the crayon texture? Or did you actually print it out and color it?
The texture was already there, from the original paper that the artist drew on/scanned in; in such cases the default background color is never pure white. I used a clone tool to scrub out the extra lines while maintaining that texture, and then a "tint to selected color" brush that comes with my ancient copy of Paint Shop Pro. Also added a semi-transparent layer of shadowing.
