ugh, having learned this technique, I'm going to want to try and find every tumblr based image I posted and check to make sure they're max size..... expect a lot of replacement posts, community, including this one

2000+ images is a lot to go through, if you need some help finding and/or replacing images don't hesitate to let me know.
I'm pretty sure tumblr caps its resized images at a vertical resolution of 1280 and a horizontal resolution of 1920, whichever comes first. So if any of your uploaded images are exactly 1280x* or *x1920, they probably need to be replaced.
Also, just so you're aware, if you find png files that are the same resolution but have a different filesize than the one that's uploaded, you don't have to replace them because there's no actual difference in quality. png is a lossless format, so they can't compress them, only optimize them.
Edit: Found a search query that might help: {{user:Grim mpixels:<2.5}} Images uploaded by you that are less than 2.5 megapixels (1280x1920 is 2.458 megapixels). It only narrows things down by about 15%, but it's better than nothing.

no, you're not going crazy and this isn't deja vu, I found a larger version
For future reference, tumblr will let you download the original image if you alter the url a bit.
Just change https to http, ##.media to data and 1280 to raw, so 78.media.tumblr.com/5e8b8...807xwRk1sg5i50o1_1280.jpg becomes data.tumblr.com/5e8b8806e...p807xwRk1sg5i50o1_raw.jpg
