As the title said I'm looking for a specific type of story, where the protagonist is a "bystander", that is that the protagonist is not the mind controller \ reality bender \ hypnotist of the story but also not their victim (though he\she can be temporarily). The mind controller could be either a friend, an enemy or a stranger of the mc, but the story should not be centered about the mc control over people or someone's control over the mc. I, Wife - a woman gets a mind control chip implanted at work, and the story is mostly focused on her husband figuring out what's going on and trying to save her. There are also parts from the wife's point of view as the controlled one.

There's also one about someone who is immune to mind control and helps rescue people from mind controllers, but I can't remember the name. I remember one feature of the story was "sentient memes", which spread by word of mouth and can take over a person's actions for a brief time when activated.

I'm a total sucker for 'rescue' stories, where the initial hypnosis has already happened (or we get to see it happen) and now it's up to the victim and her rescuer to put the pieces back together. A couple of my favorites:
