We have two depictions of the internal perception of it, with the process itself being shown as involving some kind of psychedelic trance and the consequence being someone effectively trapped in their mind palace with their mind shattered. At least how it looked for Jax.
It's not conventional mind control, but if focusing on a coin and someone's words counts as hypnosis, I don't think it's unreasonable to include abstraction under the umbrella.
