Possibly, but Grim and a couple of others (though mostly just Grim) have mentioned having this problem on a few images' comments over the past month.

Let me ask you: is it a persistent problem with all images, or does it only pop up on the occasional image?
only occasional images, usually very large ones....I think.
having tested it again just now, it now can enlarge, but several attempts last time were inneffective

That's why I'm not just saying "it sounds like a problem on your end". :P
Though, with this...

It does, ironically, sound like a loading problem on your end, because the fact that it suddenly works now without us changing anything on our end implies that it is on yours. Is your internet connection healthy/good? Could it be a memory problem with your laptop?

alas, not only is my internet connection sketchy [although it will return, and I have no problem with reloading and changing pages - reloading the page always gets me the standard, smaller image], but this lappy is definitely on it's lastish legs, having got it 2nd hand at least 6 years ago, and is experiencing some problems.

Your laptop could, indeed, be having some problems then, further complicated by your internet. I'm not saying it's the cause, but it's plausible. You saying that it only seems to happen sometimes and on large images makes me think that internet hiccups, laptop memory, or both are the cause.

I'm pretty sure they mean just this specific image (and the alternate version). Same thing happens on deviantart when I try and download it there.
