An evil virtual pet. Like a tamagachi or early digimon. In the manga, it somehow brainwashed its owner and tried to eat everyone's pets, until Yugi's went Super Saiyen/Super Special Awesome and punch a hole through its stomache.

no digimon I've ever seen, and Digimon was my first anime.

Not the show, the first Digimon toy. Which was like a bizarre virtual pet.
