A good aligned member of a mutated Mind Flayer subspecies and her very own business idea.
Today’s customer is a regular. Always being a lawful good paladin can be taxing, but after a solid hour of mindless bliss she feels totally reborn.

Except that Mind Flayers are deceptively cunning and intelligent. They could very easily have some sort of magic item in their possession (likely claimed from one of their former captives turned mindless "thralls") that would either prevent such abilities from working or provide incorrect information. And this is particularly true for Mind Flayers that actively utilize arcane magic, such as an Alhoon (or as they're also called, an "Illithilich", which is basically a Mind Flayer that has turned itself into a lich). There's a very good reason why even the drow are very wary and uneasy around Mind Flayers. Mind Flayers are about the only race that drow may actually fear.

You’re right; there are certainly easy ways to circumvent such low level spells.
Maybe it’s safer to say she has a wise and powerful advocate. Maybe an experienced gold dragon, initially wary, decided to become involved, investigated this strange claim of a good aligned mind flayer and found her to be innocent. Perhaps she even helped our little mind flayer to open the shop.
