The dude, Erik, has the ability to hypnotise people through his singing, in a siren like fashion. I feel like it's emphasized more in the book than the musical, which is more well known. He's in love with Christine but his mental/emotional instability frightens her and drives her away. I think it's a slight shame there aren't more hypnosis scenes between the two in either version of the story.
