I like your art, but those prices are insanely high...

It seems even worse when you compare them to how much other people on here charge. More power to you if people will pay that much, I guess

Nah, man, this is pretty standard pricing. Some artists can afford to charge less, but they should be seen as the exception, not the rule. There's also an argument to be made that those artists are underselling themselves, and probably should be charging more.

I'm sorry you feel that way, and I understand where you are coming from. However, below I will try to explain my thought process behind the prices so that I can at least share my opinion on the matter. You don't have to read it, and I won't blame you if you don't, or if you do and simply don't agree or don't care. :)

My justification: Basically, I want to be able to make at least a supportive portion of my income from my craft, something I have devoted my life to doing. When I first started offering commissions, my prices were lower than they are now. This is because of a number of things, most notably skill level improvements as well as the time I can devote to completing the work and the size of my following and funds required to just live. As these factors change, naturally my evaluation for what my work is worth and what I have to charge also changes, and in this case my prices are higher than they have previously been.
Personally, I don't want to have to work in something like data entry, fast food, or customer service (no shade towards anyone who works in those fields, its just not for me), so I try really hard to keep my prices high enough to realistically be able to generate a substantial part of my income while also staying low enough so that they are as reasonable as possible. It should also be noted that commissioned artwork is a luxury good, and therefore the prices may seem inflated in comparison to the product (I'll spare you all my fun, probably stupid political opinions on this mindset). I've seen other artists charge upwards of thousands of dollars for individual commissions, and while I definitely do not value my own work to be worth that much, they probably have their own completely valid reasoning and opinion for their own work (unless do something like Butch Hartman, then your opinion is objectively wrong and you shouldn't be charging what you do for what you produce). But you must take into account, in my opinion, that the artist you are commissioning has sacrificed a large portion of their fairly brief time existing to be able to share their creations with you. You are not only paying for the final product, you are also paying for that artist's unique style that has developed over many years, their countless hours of anatomical studies and color theory, and the fact that they are an actual person somewhere in the world that, like you, requires the means to survive in their society. Where I live, for example, the price of living is insanely inflated compared to the jobs available to normal people. Has that fact influenced my prices? Perhaps, but I think we should take this fact into account regardless. In a somewhat related note, you should not think you have to strain yourself to support an artist that you believe to have steep pricing, because that could be completely true to you, and that is really the only thing that matters at the end of the day.
IDK. This is somewhat a stream of consciousness so maybe it makes no sense, maybe I'm completely wrong and stupid, but yea. I hope that this all at least serves to help anyone understand my reasoning on the matter. And while I definitely do take a nice little hit to my self-esteem when I see stuff like this, I know you probably don't mean to offend me and I don't hold it against you either. Regardless, I will keep trying to get better so that one day maybe you change your mind and consider the prices to be a good value. Thank you for your input.

TLDR: an artist gotta eat :p
