More drawing. I tried to pay extra attention to shading in this one, and I feel like it came out pretty well. I've also tried drawing something original, but I find I need a reference or it just looks off. Did you guys use references when you started drawing, and if so how long did it take to not rely on them as much?
I'm not too sure about me being able to give advice yet...
Anyway, I'd say that no one should leave references for pose/body proportions until you get a decent grasp on how the body works and is composed. At some point, after a couple of months, you will be able to recognise things that look off just giving a quick glance at every draw. I think that's a good moment to leave references for poses and just use them to just replicate details of characters/objects you want to draw, like how hair work for certain character, clothes and those sort of things, like every artist does while drawing characters that he doesn't know. When I draw my oc, I don't feel the need to use any reference, for example.
I took me like 4-5 months to leave references for body poses, but sometimes (most of the time) I still have problems in certain angles.
Basically, draw a lot more until your confidence grows and you will cease to use references for body poses, it's a natural process.
