I think one helpful idea for the problem the girls are facing would be to ask others who haven't been fitted with the enchanted necklaces to help rein them in when a necklace activates. Big Mac, for example, would've learned about the situation after the incident referenced in the parent post and would certainly be willing to put a stop to anything inappropriate that Applejack might do while entranced. Without a necklace, he and others that have similarly become aware of the situation should be free to intercede directly without also becoming entranced. Then again, it may be that the necklace only acts as an initial trigger and the effect on those who attempt to intervene might very well apply to anyone.
And once again friendship solves all problems. I think Sunset and Twilight can stop researching the necklaces now and turn their focus to more important 'research'.
