I love mesmeric control. The funny thing is I have only had that card used against me, but I always loved the artwork on it. Also the fact that I played the Yugioh: War of the Roses and Mai loves using this card when you have the boss duel against her.

The fact that mesmeric control doesn't actually give you control over anything was one of the greatest disappointments of my childhood, where I was already far too obsessed with mind control :(

That and its a horrible card too.

I did always find that weird. I assume the idea was “they fall into a trance and slump over into defense position”

It doesn't even do that. Instead of switching positions (which would make a lot of sense, you control your opponents monster b giving them orders) it locks the positions for one turn. The thing is, it's such a weak way of lockdown, they can still freely attack or use effects.
If it would force them in a different position it would have at least some use but position locking is just so bad and awfully situational, this card is literally worse than sparks.

Wow, I thought it forced them into defense position. It's an even worse card than I thought

In the anime, it dropped ATK by 800 by putting them to sleep. However, I guess the IRL version is just trancing them so they stay in their current mindset. Of course, if you use a card effect to force it into Defense Mode, that could work out. But it also, you know, requires a second card to do that.
