Here's a medium story from the artist: “Kaa, please just leave me alone.” Baloo sighed. He wasn’t in the mood for Kaa’s bubbly demeanor. He had been looking for Mowgli for almost an hour and, on top of coming up empty-handed, he was starting to feel extremely hungry. He scowled at his grumbling stomach, taking a quick glance downward to notice for the first time in a while just how many extra pounds he had put on. This only annoyed him further, as he realized that this additional weight was a large reason why Mowgli was able to easily outrun him after their argument. Still busy examining his chubbier torso, his attention was diverted to the sky as darkness quickly rolled in. A sheet of large dark clouds were traveling straight towards the jungle, and he could almost hear the rain and the strong winds approaching. “I better find him soon…” Baloo mumbled. With a second-wind of determination, he continued his search, this time with a bit more urgency.

“Find who soon?” He jumped slightly and turned around to see Kaa only a couple feet from his face. He had completely forgotten that he still needed to deal with the meddlesome snake.

“No one.” Baloo lied, rolling his eyes and turning back around to continue looking.

“Is it the man-cub?” Kaa asked, following the bear closely. Baloo didn’t respond. He had known Kaa long enough to know that the sooner he got rid of him, the better. Instead, he began perusing his surroundings for a way to cross the surprisingly deep stream he had just encountered. So far he wasn’t having any luck. The slim prospect of jumping the ten feet across only reminded him of his weight again, as did the idea of tight-roping a small tree which had fallen across the gap (which was more than likely the way Mowgli got across). He growled quietly at himself. It had been one frustrating afternoon.

Sensing Baloo’s growing impatience, Kaa took his chance to get involved. “You know, I could help you if you want me to.” Kaa chuckled a bit, still with a devious grin on his face. Baloo had already anticipated this and was fully prepared to reject the offer. He was well aware of Kaa’s method of “helping”. Besides he didn’t appreciate the snake’s careless attitude toward the situation. “The ssssstorm will be here in no time.” Kaa added for extra incentive.

“I don’t want your help, Kaa. Just… ugh… go… urrgh… away.” Baloo began grunting as his began to roll a large boulder toward the bank of the stream, planning on using it to add a little bit of distance to his limited jumping abilities. When he finally had it positioned correctly, he was pleased to see that Kaa was nowhere to be found. He smiled a bit at his fortune.

Getting back to business, Baloo hefted his bulky body up onto the awkwardly-shaped rock. Standing up, he wriggled his body a bit to get loose and to try to build up some confidence for the leap. He hesitated as he stared at the opposite edge of the stream. Just as he was beginning to question whether or not to actually jump, a distant bang of thunder suddenly made the decision for him. He had to try… His face quickly contorted into one of confident determination. After placing his feet as far back on the boulder he could, he rushed forward, having only enough room for one step. His left foot planted onto the front edge of the boulder, and he pushed off as hard as he could. He braced himself for impact mid-air. With his eyes locked on the intended landing spot and arms ready to catch himself from falling forward, Baloo’s foot landed just short of the edge of the bank. He toppled forward hard, his arms unable to completely prevent the blow to his head as he landed. Luckily, enough of his body had ended up on flat ground that he was able to pull his legs up and over the edge. Success! Well, sort of. He certainly had a doozy of headache after that landing.

Baloo sat for a little to regain himself. He closed his eyes sharply and grimaced as he rubbed his forehead with one of his paws. “Okay, gotta keep going.” He said to himself, as he stood up and opened his eyes. However, the first thing Baloo saw after opening his eyes was Kaa directly in the center of his eyesight. Kaa’s eyes were already displaying those signature shiny, colored rings, and he had no chance to look away or close his eyes. Within seconds, Baloo’s eyes were opened as wide as they could, and his face began to relax.

“Oh, Baloo. You should have let me help you.” Kaa teased, having witnessed the bear’s rough landing. He kept his gaze steady and close to the bear’s face.

Baloo’s pupils began to shrink slowly as he continued to stare. “I… don’t...... want………...” Baloo tried to squeeze out words, but his mouth stopped moving and began to hang ajar as soon as the first spiral started expanding from the center of his eyes.

“…my help?” Kaa finished his sentence. “You don’t want my help?” Kaa laughed, prepared for some amusing fun. He briefly ceased the hypnotic rings to see what Baloo would do.
Slowly, Baloo’s lower jaw raised back up, and he began to appear angry again. “No. I want you to leave… me…… alo………..” he trailed off as began to lose focus again as Kaa flashed another few rings from his eyes.

Kaa loved playing with his victims like this. He loved to see all the changes in their expressions, from angry, to confused, to intrigued, to angry again… It was so much fun!

The snake laughed. “I think you do want my help.” He suggested, bringing his colorful eyes within inches of the bear’s. He maintained his gaze long enough to see the rings in Baloo’s eyes match the speed of his own. Soon, the bear’s mouth, which was currently open in awe, began to shift into a slight grin. “You don’t want to get hurt again, do you?” Kaa chuckled as his success thus far. “Hmm hmm hmm… dumb bear…” he added.

That was one step too far for Baloo. He hated being called “dumb”. Abruptly, the colorful rings cleared from his eyes and his voice returned, this time with a stronger tone. “Hey! I’m not dumb!” He retorted and pushed the snake’s face away roughly.

He turned quickly to get away from Kaa, and just as he had separated himself by a couple of steps, he heard Kaa exclaim, “Man-cub!” Of course, the snake hadn’t truly found Mowgli, but Baloo’s concern for him was great enough to give a backward glance out of instinct. Kaa had tricked him so easily.

Again, Baloo was staring into the glowing blue, green and yellow rings. He turned his body to face them more easily as his face again took on a confused look. However, because of his recent exposure, he was quicker to recognize what was happening. He turned his head just before his pupils disappeared in order to fight the hypnosis, but Kaa still had the advantage. Shortly after, Kaa slid his tail up around Baloo’s neck and used it to grasp the bear’s head and turn it toward his mesmerizing eyes. “N-n…no… don’t…” Baloo begged out of desperateness. Then a blue circle replaced his pupil and grew very slowly outward until a yellow one followed. His mouth parted again and his jaw lowered in wonder as he realized how pretty the rings were once again.

Surprisingly, Baloo was still trying to avert his eyes. Kaa could feel him trying to turn his head left, then right, then left again. But the snake’s grip was like steel; he wasn’t going to take any chances this time.

To precipitate the hypnosis, Kaa decided to bring his eyes closer than ever to Baloo’s, trying to diminish Baloo’s desire to turn away. The bear’s eyes widened as he did this, not able to resist absorbing more of the rings. “Uhhhh…….” Baloo somehow managed to blurt out, simply due to overwhelming beauty of Kaa’s eyes. For about 15 seconds, the bear’s resistant attempts became weaker and weaker, until Kaa felt them stop completely. Then, just as the snake predicted, the bear’s mouth began to close and the corners started to raise up very slowly. And after just a few more moments of the point-blank hypnosis, Baloo’s mouth was curled upward in a completely satisfied grin. The bear was now more than happy to look straight into the rings, and Kaa knew there was no chance he would escape now.

Kaa laughed again. He took a few moments to examine his new companion, and gave the bear’s soft belly a few teasing pokes with his tail. Before heading off, he told the mesmerized bear with full confidence, “Ok, now let’s go search for the man-cub…. ….dumb bear.”
