Patreon reward comic... it was SUPPOSED to be a Patreon reward DRAWING, but I got carried away, and it ended up as a four panel comic, with six characters, five of whom have very elaborate clothes. . And therefore ended up being two weeks late with it. I really need to learn my lesson about biting off more than I can chew.

I liked the Jem and the Holograms cartoon, but it was a little hindered by lousy animation and some rather bad writing... the comic series was a lot better (and had lots of body diversity and LGBTQ content!), though it suffered a little from executive meddling and being cancelled too early. Like there were always some concepts and stories that weren't explored as much as they should have, and some plot threads kind of just petered out or got resolved in a rush.... but the characters and the relationships were everything I ever wanted from Jem and the Holograms, including an adorable lesbian romance between Kimber and Stormer. And the Misfits were pretty much the best part of the comic, as they SHOULD be.

The comic had a storyarc where Synergy got a glitch/virus and turned into a mind-controlling villain named Silica. This scene hints that maybe she wasn't QUITE rid of Silica's influence...

(Bonus points to whoever can guess where Pizzazz's last line in the comic is swiped from!)

Well went overboard but this turned out fantastic because of it!

All I know of is the classic cartoon and the movie. Cool to know there is a comic though was there a reboot show too?

Mmmmmmm good to know they had a mind controlling villain too *drools*

Love it. I’m kinda partial to the old cartoon myself. But still I really wish there was more of them here

Truly outrageous! I adore those Hologram fan costumes in the last panel, and as with all you art, the characters are so expressive. Fantastic work.

Aw, thanks. ^_^ But no, there wasn't a reboot show, just the reboot comic. It was reimagined to take place in the 2010s instead of the 1980s, and featured the same characters and many of the same plotlines, but tweaked and updated. So I'm using the comic's version of the Misfits here, which means Stormer is chubby, Jetta is black and Blaze is in the band (she wasn't in the cartoon).

The mind control villain arc is called "Dark Jem" and features Synergy/Silica hypnotizing Jem and the Holograms and turning them into dark, emotionless "Goth" versions of themselves. Who then set out to take over the world using mind control music. Of course they snap out of it and manage to stop Silica with the help of a revitalized Synergy and a team-up with the Misfits (who weren't mind-controlled because they refused to listen to the Holograms' music), but it's a very classic mind control plot.

I liked the cartoon, but as I said, it wasn't always well written and I thought the animation kind of ruined it. There's such a lot of neat concepts there, and the visuals are always such that they COULD have been amazing... there's so many great colours, and gloriously surreal situations and imaginative sequences, especially in the music videos... and it's all just underwhelming because the actual animation is so awful. I would have loved to see what Jem and the Holograms might have looked like if it was made in the 1990s instead, after TV animation got a serious facelift and we started getting animation that was actually competent even on a TV budget.
