Makes an interesting comedy of him staying in debt, the question is, how did he go into the debt?
and sadly I have lack of idea on that one, need something comical, like being a Bad Gambler and lost a Dragon Hoard XD

and Idea I had of a down on his luck powerful Sorcerer adventurer... well Ex-adventurer {maybe} that to pay the bills turns to his early childhood knowledge/profession skill. Being a Butler.

Could always do something like, he made a bet he could easily win, like a one on one spell competition. His enemy's spell wasn't that impressive and it should have been an easy win. But mid cast, butler dude sneezes ruining his incantation and losing the bet. And because he thought it such an easy win he had bet his life savings.

Beat a dragon and stole its hoard, but the dragon took him to court and sued for assault and battery, breaking and entering, and mental trauma for giving the dragon adventurer-based PTSD. The dragon won, so now he has to pay back the hoard (which he had already spent), with interest. The dragon was a legal citizen that paid his taxes after all, and the sorcerer did just break into his home so it was self-defense.

The dude managed to find a leprechaun or some other fairy's stash of gold and loot and made off with it. The robbed fae found out who did it, and went to him in disguise. In disguise, they got him to spend more and more money on credit for a massive party to celebrate his newfound wealth, getting him drunker and drunker to buy more and more stuff. Then right before it became time to pay up, the fae teleported away...along with all of the money.
X3 heh

consider: all of the above, and the story changes every single time he tells it. truth spells don't stop this. if pressured into telling the story twice under the same truth spell, he will tell two entirely different stories. he is adamant that he's being entirely consistent with the tale, and can't see why everyone else is so confused about it when it's such a simple sequence of events.
XD XD XD oh my yes!
