Stumbled onto a colour version whilst looking up the uncoloured one to see if the guy was supposed to be anyone in particular.

I don't watch it, but I remember reading a forum or blog post somewhere that explained it very well. In summary, it was that the characters are diverse and adorable, the show itself is humorous, and the plot (interjection: the show has plot?) is intriguing in its own right. The poster compared watching it to compulsive watching of youtube kitten videos.

Canonically, Queen Chrysalis can hypnotize/brainwash her victims, leaving them with glowing green eyes. You can see her partner in this pic has glowing green eyes.
