I keep seeing stuff like this, and I really want to watch this series, but I'm confused....

Do I need to watch Index 1&2 before Railgun, or can I watch them in whatever order? I've been told Railgun is a prequel or something...

I've never watched Railgun, bit I have watched Index s1+2. So, all I can say is that you don't need to watch Railgun to make any sense of Index. Can't say it works the other way around or not, though.

Don't take me as an expert on this, but AFAIK the Index anime is an adaptation of a light novel series, while the Railgun anime is an adaptation of a manga that's a spinoff of the light novel series.

The Railgun manga is the only part of the entire franchise that I've watched/read, and it's pretty alight*, but I will say it can be super confusing because it's always referring to characters I've never seen like I'm supposed to know who they are; I don't know if this is the case with the anime though.

*I started reading Railgun again because I read about Misaki Shokuhou somewhere and I was like, "damn." One of the few times getting into something over a character's MC power actually pays off lol

the 2 series' work well enough on their own, but you will miss certain parts of railgun if you haven't watched index. certain references will go right over your head (such as kamui-sensei saying "Bad students who blow the roof off my house", and some of them serve to give railgun a time-frame in correlation to index's story) index seasons one and 2 came first and are the "main storyline" the railgun series is about one quarter prequel, 1 quarter a different perspective of an index ark, and 1 half completely new and having nothing to do with index.

basically? if you want the full story watch index seasons 1 and 2 first, and railgun second. i suppose you could watch it in the order of Index season 1, railgun, then index season 2 to much the same effect but i wouldn't suggest this. index and railgun have slightly different focuses in their structure that make watching them out of order like that feel wierd.

of all the things i have thought of making an account for, this was the one that actually did it lol.
