I should probably add some text then?
Honestly, I don't think there's any text that could make this look like femsub. If it were me, I'd take the original image, do a glow effect on her eyes, and add text to make it femdom. It'd still be rather frightening, but it would fit better.

When it comes to mannipping, you can't always just empty the eyes and call it femsub. You need to pick images that portray the desired result beforehand. Your highschool DXD manips are perfect examples of this. Those energetic smiles can easily be turned into blank entranced stares after a few minutes of GIMP or whatever editing software you use. Text and altering facial expressions can help expand your options greatly, but in general, it's best to work with pics that already have what you need beforehand.
In this case, I don't think any text can portray a convincing femsub situation.

I was very close to accepting this challenge, but decided that sleeping soon was more important. :P I'm fairly sure that I could, with some proper time and effort, write a plot twisting caption that could make this very much femsub. Writing is a powerful tool. :3
Even so, it certainly would never turn out to be quite as good as an imagine that already practically screams femsub.
So, yes, you're entirely right. It's very much ideal to find an image that works for what you want rather than to try to make an image work for what you want, if only because it's much more difficult to properly force images to be what they aren't.
