How does that hypnotize I wonder. I’d probably just be pissed someone is shining a light in my face

On another note who invented the pen light and why? What purpose does it serve?

They're just tiny flashlights, so they're good for anything a tiny flashlight would be good for, which generally means lighting up small areas where a bigger flashlight would get in the way or would just be needlessly cumbersome. In particular, they're popular with eye doctors since they're good for testing pupil responses (which gives the pen light hypnosis trope some pretty bad suspension-of-disbelief problems if you think about it).

well, the 'realistic' hypno-trope on them is, that the flash distracts the brain (adjusting pupils and stuff), so the words of the hypnotist are simply registered ;)
