Alright, in my time lurking here, I've developed a standard guide to manips, so maybe it'll help.

1: What is the cause of hypnotism?
It looks like that little charm there, but we don't have any really good way to rationalize that. Try to add some generic effects and see where you can go from there.

2: Eyes as an indicator?
They look pretty glassy and empty, but it's generally prefered that you give them a more elaborate effect.
For example, here you might want to whitewash them, or figure out how to lower her eyelids realistically.
In any case, find a colour that you think will work for the picture, and use it for the key contributors in the actual hypnosis.

3: Story?
Now, this might be where things get tricky. For subtlety, do not use text. Shoop in a pendulum or wires going into her head and automatically we get a better explanation of what's going on. Of course, if you want to practice your writing chops, that can also help get a story across.

I agree withbRidley that a symbol or spiral in the eyes would be cool, andiwould love a story to go with it. But a great manip with the dull eyes and the sparkly pendant. (Plus it's Rinoa, Whooo!)

If I may give my opinion on these:

1: The pendant is glowing, which works as an effect for MC.

2: This being an anime manip, glassy/empty eyes is plenty, though I would try to dull the eyes rather than just blur them.

3: I don't consider a story to be necessary on any MC pics, manip or otherwise.

Also ask 'is the character the target or the hypnotiser?'. Here one can say it's questionable. One can say 'the pendant is affecting her'. One can also say 'the pendant is affecting the viewer'. Given FF8's weirdness with her being a Sorceress and long distance control, one and ALSO say 'the pendant is affecting her AND the viewer' or 'The pendant is affecting her, to use her powers on you'.

Meh. That's just my opinion. I mean, I'd prefer a soft glow for hypnotic accessories, fully empty eyes rather than just blurred eyes, and text can enhance a pic in the right circumstances, but I think this works.

More to the point, it just shows how damned difficult it is to come up with a single list of things that make good manips. ;)
