It's implied the abesnce of her intelligence and her altered body are both the result of the cracked gem on her head. Her gem basically being her brain and what regulates gem shape-shifting powers. Cracked gems have been known to adversely affect the cognitive functions of gems, tho whether or not this counts as a form of brain drain is up to debate.
