It boils down to his writing. He's committed dozens of errors with plot contrivances and holes, many of his characters are two-dimensional and do things either nonsensical or as the plot dictates them to do to move things along, major female characters are constantly put into situations of forced vulnerability or peril for the sake of drama and to evoke pity from the audience, and he's made terrible portrayals of mental health that show a serious lack of understanding and/or research.

Yet despite all this, he's highly regarded by the industry and game journalists, and he's managed to pull big names into his work (much to their detriment).

In short, he's a wannabe film auteur who couldn't make it as a film maker, so he tried to slide into that image through video games. He got away with it for a good while, but enough people became aware of his awful writing to check that narrative.
