This is referring to the outer appearance mostly. And media from cartoons. You never see a goth smile. Always has a neutral expression/expressionless, hence the conception that they act like that is because they have no emotions. I know pop culture is different and it started out completely based on music on other stuff... But the point here is to adress the appearance.
