There's something that always bothered me about large scale brainwashing, especially if it's effectively permanent. The snowball potential would allow you to blob at an ever accelerating rate if you're not stopped early enough, and any soft cap on that blobbing ability would merely slow you down enough to give the rest of the world time to destroy you.

So, unless there's a hard cap on your blobbing ability, at best fleeing would allow the protagonists to mount a proper defense... Assuming they have the resources/contacts to do so.
