Tech based mind control may be quicker and faster, but also tends to be easily undone if it is tied to a device. Like the Neurocompliance chips from Kim Possible.
Magic based mind control tends to be permanent, or at least tied to the caster. And it is nominally more difficult to beat the shit out of someone, then to remove or disable some piece of technology.
