I hope there are good sorting tools built into the UI. Otherwise this could become nearly unplayable in the lategame.

Well, we could take cues from another game with a massive roster of named characters of varying significance: Xenoblade 3. You could get character after character, so many, and make some web to display personalities and relationships, but not all of them are going to matter. Then, quests get you the actually important ones that join your party and stuff.
