For those who don't follow the show: Opaline is the main villain of G5 of mlp. She's an evil alicorn who is after a magic crystal the main characters have which she thinks will power her back up to full strength. Misty is Opaline's meathod of infiltrating the town and getting the crystal.

On the surface her relationship with Misty seems to be a typical overbearing villain and her fumbling henchman you've seen in a lot of cartoons. A wrinkle is that Opaline is basically Misty's adoptive mother. Also, despite the fact that Misty is a grown mare, she still doesn't have a cutie mark. A hint at Misty's bereft upbringing. Opaline has promised Misty that when she's powered back up she'll give Misty a cutie mark.

A pony's cutie mark manifests when a Pont discovers their passion. The thing that they are naturally talented at which gives them fulfillment. There is a period of discovery when the pony is young before they find themselves. Some get their marks earlier or later than others.
The fact that Misty has made it all the way to adulthood without discovering her talent suggests that she was too busy serving Opaline's whims to explore her own wants and abilities.
