I think that's just because neither the anime nor the main character really captivated everyone.

I really liked it for a number of reasons, & with my love of hypno/MC, found myself enjoying certain scenes more than normal. However, I'm an otaku who likes & can even sympathize with Shinji from Eva so I may be the odd one here.

Not that this implies quality, given Gundam SEED Destiny is 5th. But it implies popularity, even if only with a Japanese audience. Booru and 2chan et all should be way more full of Geass.

I think a fair piece of it is that the mind control is used mostly for utilitarian needs after Lelouch's grandiose first move, until near the very end. Once he'd reached that point, presumably some 'darker' uses of his Geass were in place, but by then the pattern was established that the MC wasn't a source of hotness.
