I've been messing around with upscaling. Still learning the ins and outs, but if anyone has any low-res images they'd like me to take a crack at, feel free to post them here.

No offense, but don't we usually delete upscales here? I mean, pictures with text I can kind of get it (if it helps with the translation), but otherwise, upscales are usually treated as lower-quality duplicates. Or at least they were when I was admin.
I'm using a program that sharpens lower-quality images. It's not perfect (jpeg artifacts tend to get pretty blown up) but it's preferable to super tiny pics, imo.

We usually do, if the upscales are really, really bad (as most of them tend to be). But there were a few practically ancient instances of upscales that we allowed in the past, if you remember. They're gone now because the artist wanted them removed right before you resigned, but they were on the site for the good part of a year.
Pom brought the whole upscale thing Vorp's been on about to my attention earlier, and asked what do. This was my reply:
If the higher resolution images have noticeably worse compression, keep the smaller one. The larger ones should be deleted if they were only resized, but kept and parented to the smaller version if they were upscaled AND cleaned up.
Generally speaking, the only time a smaller image should be replaced with a larger version of the same image is if the larger version is not upscaled, but rather the image's native resolution.
Of course, what I typed here really only applies to source images that are extremely small. There's never a reason to upscale an absurdres image. :P
