In the most delightfully literal sense.

You know, there was a Choose Your Own Goosebumps book that I remember reading back in sixth or seventh grade that invoked that exact trope. I think it was Summer Camp Is Killing Me or something like that, and one of the bad ends was to have the alien overlords stick a tube in your ear and fill your brain with blue goop that made you absolutely compliant to their will.
