A too commonly used phrase to describe a major city is that it never sleeps, however, for Gotham City it is simply unavoidable. For so many in this darkened hub of industry, commerce and crime there is little distinction between the night and the day. All that changes is who is watching from the shadows and whom their eyes fall upon.

Helena Bertinelli refocused the lenses of her binoculars to better see through the light haze of smog & pollution that was trying to disrupt her stakeout. She had been following a trail of private robberies for over a week now and the Huntress really didn't feel like letting all that effort go to waste tonight.

The victims had ranged from the rich and arrogant of Gotham's upper class to the smaller jewelry firms, the items taken not necessarily the most valuable on offer, but compact and easy to carry. Selina going back to her old ways would have been an easy conclusion, but Huntress had been reliably informed that she had an alibi for at least three of the heists. Furthermore, the fact that all the potential witnesses had been left completely amnesic regarding the events really didn't fit the feline thief's MO.

She had tried to press for further details, but Batman had promptly sealed his lips on the matter. A smile played on Helena's lips at the memory, it was always amusing to hear Bruce turn all quiet and broody when he was trying cover up his love life.

Helena's smile evaporated into the cold night air as her prey finally showed herself, and it was definitely a 'her'. From her vantage point on the building adjacent, Helena noted that her target was 5'7'' and possibly 120lbs if she was hiding any muscles beneath the red catsuit covering her body from the neck down. Firing off a grappling arrow from her crossbow, the Huntress landing softly on the roof a small ways from her red clad thief, the sounds of ventilation exhausts and buzz of the nightlife below keeping her approach from her prey's focus. Or so she thought...

"I know you're there, sweetie," turning her head in the direction of Helena's hiding spot. Huntress grit her teeth in frustration, at a loss for how the thief had noticed her. "I've learned the hard way since coming to Gotham to keep my wits about me, honey," came the apparent reply to the heroine's confusion, "so why not come out and we can work this out like grown ups?"

"There's no way to 'work this out', thief," Huntress declared calmly, revealing herself and stepping out from the shadows as if it were her plan all along. A trait she was actually glad to have picked up from Bruce. With bow primed and drawn in her hand, the experienced heroine walked to stand a few feet in front of her cornered prey. The mischievous glint in the other woman's hazel eyes, though, beneath her bandanna style mask was unnervingly uncharacteristic for someone who was cornered.

"Please, my name is Rose, or Mistress Rose to those who know me well," the villainess gave her counterpart a cheshire grin, placing her hand on the singular object on her belt, but made no effort to move it yet, "and I would just love to get to know you well, my dear Huntress."

"I think I'll pass," Helena retorted, unfazed by the costumed criminal knowing her name. If anything she might as well take it as a compliment, it meant her name was known to those she hunted and that meant they feared her. "Firstly, return what you've stolen just now and then you can tell me where the rest of your loot is."

"What, this?" Rose gasped in feigned offense as she raised the object that had been on her belt. "But this is mine," Rose let the item fall from her gloved palm and dangle on the chain entwined in her fingers, revealing it to be a golden pocket watch, "a gift from the woman who set me on this path."

"Charming," Huntress deadpanned.

"Truly," Rose replied, the mischief in her gaze never faltering, "It's not very valuable though. Wouldn't really be worth stealing unless you knew how special it was."

Helena raised an eyebrow, "Special?" she asked, perplexed by the strange statement.

“Very special. Now," the crimson clad seductress claimed, beginning to swing the polished golden timepiece before the vigilante's eyes with a subtle flick of her wrist, "just let your eyes follow the watch, Huntress.” Helena suppressed a derisive snort. 'The woman couldn't possibly be serious.' she thought to herself as she raised her crossbow to take direct aim at Rose. 'Does she really think she could hyp-'

"That's right....” the woman's voice cut into her thoughts, and Helena realized, with some alarm, that her eyes had indeed drifted from the woman before her to the swinging watch dangling from her hand, “Just let your eyes follow the watch, and let yourself relax as you listen to my voice.”

Beneath her mask, Helena's brow furrowed. She couldn't dismiss this as a joke anymore, or she might just-

“Just follow my voice, and let yourself relax.” the words came, cutting off her line of thought once again. She ground her teeth. Relaxing was out of the question. She had to focus. “That's right, sweetie,” the hypnotist continued, the words eliciting an unbidden sense of accomplishment within the crimefighter, “Just let your eyes follow the watch as you listen to my voice. Let my words guide you as feel more and more relaxed, it feels so wonderful to relax. Listening to my voice helps you feel so relaxed, so wonderful...”

Helena's heart was beating faster now. Her eyes were refusing to leave the gently swinging timepiece, and every time the auburn haired hypnotist before her opened her mouth, her thoughts seemed to scatter as the sound of Rose's voice washed over her mind, but she had to- to-

"Following my words feels so--- EEP!"

An almost musical 'twang' sounded through the night air as Helena felt something kick back in her hands. Her crossbow, she thought dully. Rose's surprised yelp came as Helena's bolt violently ripped the watch from her hand and pinned it to the wall behind her by it's chain.

“Like hell!” the Huntress snarled, masking her relief. Her fingers were already moving, as if on their own accord, through the practiced motions of reloading her weapon, and before Rose had even had the time to rub some feeling back into her aching hand, she had the thief at crossbowpoint once again. “There's no way I'm just going to stand here and 'just let you' do anything you please!” she said, forcing a confident smirk.

“I... see.” Rose said, raising her arms in a gesture of surrender, genuinely impressed that the heroine had such good reflexive aim. Perhaps she had allowed her recent successes to result in overconfidence, which the current situation had just proven could lead to disastrous consequences. Maybe, she mused, a different approach was called for here.

"Can't blame a girl for trying, though, can you?” she said, her lips curling into a disarming smile.

"I can stick a girl full of crossbow bolts for trying.” Huntress retorted grimly. Inwardly, she was still reeling from how close she came to falling under the thieving hypnotist's spell. Kicking herself for letting the temptress get the better of her.

"Point, taken.” Rose replied easily, “You're in control here. We'll play it however you like.”

"That's right...” Helena said, taking some satisfaction in echoing Rose's earlier words right back at her, “I am. And it would take more than a calming voice and some parlor tricks to change that.”

"So it would appear.” Rose agreed with a rueful smile, “I guess there's really nothing I can do against you.”

"That's right.” Huntress repeated, though not as confidently as she would've liked. Inwardly, her relief at escaping the induction was spreading, letting Helena relax, it felt good. Perhaps the woman hadn't realized how close she'd come to walking away unscathed, perhaps even taking Helena in tow with her.

"You're perfectly safe from me now...” Rose continued, speaking soothingly, eyeing Huntress' weapon, “I would have to be an idiot to try something now.”

"Yes...” Helena said slowly. She was safe. She felt certain of that much, and Rose was right... she would have to be an idiot to try anything suspicious now. "You have all the power here...” the hypnotist's voice washed over her again, “I am disarmed, and you could put me down in a heartbeat.”

"So long as you have that,” Rose continued, gesturing at the crossbow, “you don't have to worry about a thing...”

Helena looked down at her weapon. The thing had saved her life more times than she could count. She trusted in it to see her through danger more than she did anyone else. “It must be wonderful,” she could hear Rose adding, “to be able to feel so safe...” and she found herself nodding. It was true, after all.

"It feels wonderful to know you're safe now.” Rose stressed gently, smiling to see the vigilante's focus leaving her, “To know that nothing bad will happen if you just let yourself relax.”

Huntress found herself nodding again. It did feel wonderful. The relief she's felt before was flooding her now. Rose was right. She was safe. Nothing bad would happen. She could just let herself-

"Relax.” the word sounded from so close, as if it was being whispered in her ear, “Just let yourself relax.” She could feel a weight pushing down her arm. Didn't fight it. There was no reason to. “You are perfectly safe here with me,” cooed the voice. Rose's voice? But... Rose was- “It feels so wonderful to be here, safe with me.” -wonderful. And safe. She could feel an arm wrapping around her, a hand resting comfortingly on her shoulder. It felt warm. Safe. Relaxing. Wonderful.

"That's right, dear.” Rose murmured soothingly to the quickly fading crimefighter as she leaned in even closer to her, “You can just relax now, and let me help you feel wonderful. You are so safe here with me that you can just let your eyes fix back on the watch...”
