Yup :-) but Ran Mouri isn't in the Keywords, but still her character is well known enough that I'm sure everyone knows her under either name :-)

Well I had no idea the japanese names were changed and I'm pretty sure other Case Closed/Detective Conan fans who didn't watch the American version are the same :/

Yep. She's also called Ran Mouri in France. I'm surprised that the US version changed her name.

Same in the German version. I won't even try to comprehend why they americanized her name in the US-Dub, everyone (even kids younger than 10) with enough eyesight left to stare at a TV screen will realize after about 20 seconds that the whole thing takes place in Japan. I don't even want to know into what they turned all the Japanese prefectures the story takes place in (California, NY, Florida and Texas?).

Considering that I'll just change the tag and make the US version (same for the series title) an Alias later, otherwise 98% of the people that haven't watched the dubbed version (including pretty much everyone outside the US and anyone who watched a fansub instead) won't have a clue how to search for Detective Conan pics.

Its far less common outside of a few kids shows nowadays (I think Doraemon got some knocks for its recent changes here), but back in the 90s and early 00s this was pretty standard. To be fair, I think it also had to do with far more people from the 40s still not liking Japan, where as most of us now quite like Japan lol

As for the tags, our rules state that the primary tag should be the American names, but we've approved aliasing the Japanese name to it for situations like this.

I understand. Also, it may be similar to what happened to Naruhodo Ryuiichi becoming Phoenix Wright. Being a mystery novel, there are several riddles based on culture or names that would be difficult to understand otherwise. I admit in the Italian dub I was unable to understand half of the cases, since they were based on kanji or stuff like that.

I can fill in a little more information on why that was done.

Funimation usually dosn't like to do this with the series they dub specifically for DVD and Blu-Ray releases, but at the time, they were campaigning hard to get Case Closed as a permanent fixture on Adult Swim/Cartoon Network at the time. Since this was the intent, to get it on tv, both Funimation and the licencor wanted the names changed in the hopes that the casual audience would have an easier time accepting it, on top of the show's fanbase, and the Japanese licnecor also agreed to it because they wanted to do whatever they felt would get the series the most acceptance.

This even included them casting dark lighting effects over the gorier parts of dead bodies as even Adult Swim wasn't willing to take the full risk of animated gore. However, it ended up being pointless eventually as it only aired for a short time until the complete lack of ratings success got Cartoon Network/Adult Swim to yank it off the lineup.

However, even though a little had been aired on tv, Funimation now had a consistency problem with earlier episodes with the names and the show wasn't making enough money even on DVD to bother redubbing it from the start, or switching names and other changes back after about a whole season, so for the rest of the releases they did, they were stuck with it. The show never really turned any profit for them either on tv or DVD, and eventually they just gave up on it entirely.
