Why so? Gems are formed from internal pressures naturally, even on this planet. Why would their worlds be dead? They haven't said their worlds are different. Sure, they can colonise death worlds easily(A massive advantage) but they're not gonna burn all life.
well they suck the life out of their planets, and I guess I thought of their worlds as inorganic and, well, gem-like. There might still be magma, but any not-sucked-up minerals capable of burning would be really rare.

Gemstones are created by natural processes. If there is tectonic activity on their planet, there was likely organic life at some point.
