Actually, I really liked Haruyuki. It's nice to see a male protagonist in anime that doesn't look and act like every other male protagonist in anime.
I disagree, It didn't matter that he was fat, the issue was he whines the entire series, beats girls, and yells at everyone who tries to help him. Kirito...was just too cliche.
idk, I could relate to Haru way more than I could relate to Kirito. While they're both god tier gamers, Haru has struggles to deal with.
For one thing, when he was younger, he had to go through a divorce. And if that wasn't bad enough, he overheard how neither of his parents wanted custody of him. That sent him down a sad path. He never felt confident, he got bullied, and he had two friends that stuck by him who constantly just helped him. He felt he couldn't contribute anything to their friendship. He just wanted to leave it all behind. The people making fun of him because of his weight and looks, his friends who look at him as a charity case, and generally a world that didn't want him.
That's where his Senpai came in. She give him an amazing power that could help him control his destiny. He felt eternally grateful to her. Someone who actually helped him become stronger. And with this power and confidence, he rekindled a real friendship with his old friends and made new friends as a result.
Haru whines a hell of a lot. But it's not for nothing.

Accel world, great anime with a horrible protagonist.
Better than Kirito.

This. So much this. That being said, Accel World still sucked for pretty much all the reasons SAO does.

General consensus seems to be that the first story arc was good, and everything after was not only not needed, but shit.
