I like to imagine that steven is trying to hypnotize them so that they'll get along better.
The only way for them to get along is for Peridot to learn to overcome her belief in the caste system, her homophobia, her racism, and general outlook.

You know, I don't even think they see themselves as female, from the point of view of binary sexual organs. Considering that Peridot's questions about Steven's biology never include that he is a "male". He's just another Gem, just one born in very odd circumstances for them.
