Actually, if you go play Skyward Sword that Link is clearly shown to NOT be mute. In a few early game cutscenes Link clearly talks to other people, though there's no dialogue boxes or vocalizations.

Wait...he's not mute? I never played Skyward Sword, so that's interesting. Maybe his other incarnations are, but that's strange if he showed himself capable.

Link speaks in other games too. There's just never any text boxes, or they're given as short, preset answers (usually "yes" or "no", but sometimes more than that). In Twilight Princess, there's a scene where Link explains to the village chief that the children are safe in Kakariko. It all happens off-screen, but Link obviously had to talk to convey all the information the chief then repeats. I mean, either that or Link is a fucking master at charades.

Like I said, a silent protagonist does not mean the protagonist is literally mute.
