To be fair, Megami Tensei is the original franchise that the others spring off. Shin Megami Tensei comes off of it, as does Persona and most of the MegaTen games. It's only really outside of Japan that Shin Megami Tensei is used as an umbrella franchise name nowadays.

Hm. The megaten wiki indicates the show as "Tokyo Revelation." Adapted from the SMT: Tokyo Revelation manga, which was loosely based on the SMT series.

Ya wanna go even further MegaTen is based off the Digital Devil Story novels. And yes, that name was used as a subtitle for one of the games.
1
