I'm guessing they refer to ambient occlusion. A system in rendering to determine the effect of the ambient light on an object, such as simulating the result of reflections off walls etc, based on an object's geometry

Thanks. And I will add that if someone's mad because you can see her feet and the table's feet with the globe ON the table being the light source.. I tried rendering it with no light under there, and it looked terrible. So, shrug.
