This makes darks darker and lights lighter. The normal-ass camera seems to provide something closer to true shade, which seems very important for your art since it's B&W.
If you are going for this look but want to use something that actually is fun, try technical markers, technical pens or a crow-quill. Note card paper might be thick enough to get good marks, seems like what you are using anyways. It would take a bit of effort to learn though, and you're probably going to lose a few drawings to the pens (even the technical ones leak).
