It's the staff speaking through her. Mirage was furry to start with. The staff decided to be more choosy about its owner after watching its last one get goaded into falling for a silly trick. I'd guess the test is to stare into the eye jewels of the staff, since that's how the hypnosis worked (as far as I remember), and if your will is strong enough, you pass?
