I love how it's always Ami that people love seeing turn evil. Is it because of the Dark mercury arc from the live action series, or is it because people see Ami as the most likely to betray them or something?

I think because the troops about the nice guy/girl that turns to be evil (or be corrupted) are very strong.

And also, it could be very cool to see the shy character, always submissive and kind, control and play with a sexy evil smile the others.

It probably is the Dark Mercury arc that started it.

I'm guessing one led to the other.

Also, I'm reminded how the SMC designs were perfectly fine, but it was a shame it was wasted on such a lackluster adaptation.

Seriously...what were they thinking with Crystal? They gutted the characters of their personalities!

Tried my best at a translation. There were some bits I wasn't sure of, probably because I've never watched it.

90s Kid Pharaoh? If he takes over the world, will he finally bring in that big time ska revival?

Crystal in general was a complete waste of potential.

Hollow characters, lazy Writing, bland/interchangeable antagonists.

Virtually no love or effort was put into it, and it showed horribly...

They were thinking "let's literally adapt the manga." Most of what I think we remember most fondly from the original anime is all the padding that Toei used to develop the Teenagers With Attitude we all know and love. Without all those sentai tropes and sensibilities to fall back on, Crystal had to deliver a dynamite plot and, well, it really wasn't.

I'm not saying that Takeuchi's manga wasn't important, but important does not necessarily equate to good.
