In the beginning, the VR.AT(Virtual Reality Accelerated Training) research project was meant to give military personnel an easy way to gain field experience. By stimulating the brain directly, the typical VR motion sickness was practically eliminated and the subjects were able to immerse themselves in the virtual world to a degree previously unheard of.

However, after a while the project was expanded to also help the personnel improve their physical strength. Their bodies were outfitted with lots of muscle stimulators that were active during their VR.AT sessions. It was quickly discovered that the VR.AT subjects were able to improve their physical strength more quickly and easily than their counterparts that only received normal training. In the field, the VR.AT subjects were able to outperform their peers by a wide margin.

The special ops division took notice and tasked the VR.AT crew to produce an enhanced version of VR.AT that could quickly and efficiently produce top quality soldiers. To improve efficiency, restraints were added to eliminate any involuntary and/or unwanted movement during longer training sessions. The muscle stimulator output and efficiency could be further increased because of the now fixed body position.

As a side effect of this, some subjects would become sexually aroused during their training session. By accident it was discovered that these subjects would remember certain parts of the VR training segment as their own memory and/or suffer from memory loss. The severeness seemed to be directly linked to the amount of sexual pleasure the subjects felt.

After this discovery the VR.AT project was quickly branded top secret and told to further explore this new discovery. Various sexual stimulators were added so the VR.AT setup could deliver intense sexual pleasure. After a few test runs, the VR.AT system was able to insert, modify, and even completely erase memories from the subjects during their sexual euphoria.

The special ops division were very pleased with the results as they could now easily and quickly train "puppet" operatives. The puppets would have very favourable memories inserted of the task at hand to ensure their loyalty. Unwanted memories from missions would be altered or wiped.

After their introduction in the field, they were quickly nicknamed "VR rats" because they would spend most of their training and down time strapped into the VR.AT machine.
