The Babadook. Is a horror movie monster. If you like horror movies, go see it, it's actually an example of a modern horror movie that's GOOD. GREAT even :P
[spoiler=But if you don't want to and don't care about spoilers...]The Babadook is this being who haunts this child and his mom. The mom is going through depression and struggles of being a single mother since her husband died. And the son isn't exactly normal either as he's obsessed with the Babadook to the point where he brings a weapon to school to protect himself from it.
Anyways, The Babadook resides in a creepy ass pop up book all about him (And no, destroying the book won't help, they tried), saying that he will continue to haunt the two and says the more you try to deny him, the stronger he gets. To the point where he actually possesses the mom and has her kill their pet dog, and try to kill the son and eventually herself.
But in the end she manages to overcome the Babadook and lock it away in her basement, but not killing it. Instead keeping it there and even trying to take care of it. Because it turns out the Babadook can also possibly representation of the mom coming to terms with her stress and grief. It's always gonna be there, forever a part of her, but she's accepted it and can now keep it in check. It's not canonically explained if this IS the reason for the Babadook's existence, like if it existed before all this or if the mom's feelings created it or something, but eh.[/spoiler]
