It's necessary. Darkseid's and Granny Goodness's conditioning is nigh-on unbreakable once locked in. And they would never put those characters in that position unless it were a 'what-if'.

Funnily enough Big Barda actually was hypnotised, at least for most of it. She breaks out of it when Mister Miracle strokes her cheek, allowing Mother Box to release her from her programming. She pretends to be under for a little while longer though.

Please remember that she was commander of the Female Furies of Apokalips before Mister Miracle turned her away from that. One of the only escapees, and something Granny's been hoping to correct for a damm long time.
