In the book, Dorothy did end up enslaved, no hypnosis required(Nor able. Dorothy received a kiss of protection from the Good Witch of the North and the book says directly: 'The Wicked Witch was both surprised and worried when she saw the mark on Dorothy's forehead, for she knew well that neither the Winged Monkeys nor she herself dare harm the girl in any way').

She only destroyed the witch by a matter of anger. The witch got one of the slippers by making her trip on an invisible bar while she was carrying water. Dorothy was so angry("Give me back my shoe!" "No, and someday I'll get the other one too!") she tossed the pail of water on her. Thus the melting.
