Very much work it needed, flat characters it has.

heh. Yeah, the series didn't really seem to really move like the earlier ones. I think the only Disney one I liked was the one where all the 'heroes' blew up getting the plans of the deathstar to the rebels. Shame the other ones can't seem to pull off the same feeling of work as that one to me.

It's much easier to get a dramatic plot going when the outcome is certain and most if not all characters are going to die, which in the case of Rogue One resulted in a pretty well structured one-off movie where the plot writers didn't have to have any concerns in regards to keeping main characters alive to guarantee sequels. It's obvious the screen writers therefore didn't have much pressure from the top on how to make things end, because a sequel wasn't going to happen anyway.

It's pretty obvious that the main Disney trilogy is written with heavy executive meddling, with the higher ups having concluded that as much nostalgia pandering to the original trilogy as possible guarantees the most sales, to the point of the plot structure of the new movies being almost identical to the corresponding films from Episode IV and V (Not!Death Star? Check. Not!Battle of Hoth? Check.). For all the things people criticize the prequel-trilogy for, it did at least do it's own thing. Toss in some old characters to please the really old fans but kill them off to get any sort of unpredictability into the plot (besides killing of minor one movie only side characters and no name redshirts), also coupled with tossing in the new and really misguided lazy plot writing trend of "just make things happen and kill characters because 'it's unpredictable', even if only so because of nonsensical plot twists you simply can't see coming" (also seen in all it's glory in GoT Season 8, especially the battle of Winterfell as well as Jamie's sudden U-turn). Expect them to kill off Lando or Palpatine (again) or someone similar in the final movie.

Good enough to sell a few figurines of retirement age Luke and Han while keeping the new main characters and their cute companions in the spotlight to milk them with merch, especially in the future, in addition to all the not!Empire Disney redesigns of Stormtroopers, AT-STs. AT-ATs etc. (whatever their new 'totally different' New Order names are). Probably also the reason we got only one movie properly set in the Empire-Rebel era focusing on that conflict, because it's hard to introduce new things for the old and cramped setting you can sell new and hot merch of (pretty much mostly Shoretroopers and the Occupier tank for Rogue One, though the latter does look kind of misplaced with the helmets of the crew being much closer to the New Order designs).

Also congrats to anyone actually reading this wall of text, I really did get carried away xD...

...Why am I the only one here who actually likes a majority of modern day forms of entertainment and chooses to focus on the positives while acknowledging the negatives, these days? Why is virtually every other person I see on this bandwagon of spite by ignoring any and all the positives while taking whatever negatives there are these days and making them into mountains when they're really just molehills? Can't we just ENJOY entertainment anymore? -_-

Wow. I thought I was the only one. I may not like it as much as other Disney remakes or even as much as other movies but I thought it was decent. I do have issues with it but my enjoyment outweighs them. I give the new Lion King movie a 5 out of 10, personally.
