I always assumed these things did something a lot worse than just possessing, considering how Romani ended.

I mean I did as well. Just was explaining the context to a friend as well. So went to re-watch some of the old scenes.
Might do something with the concept myself. But, I also think it'd be simple enough that they want to use Zelda for her abilities, and when they're *done*; she'll be more like what happened to Romani.
