It's not really exclusive to this character in particular, any Greater Sin Eater can turn a mortal creature into another Sin Eater, the finer points of the corruption involves a lot of aetherology which is a science of the game's lore I'm not going to delve into but basically. The Sin Eater plants a "Seed of Light" when they wound the victim which starts irrevocably tainting their aether. (basically their lifeforce) anything from a nick of a Sin Eater's blade or claws, to full-on impalement will basically seal your fate.
Depending on the severity of the wound the process can either be swift and excruciating, or slow, suffocating. and inevitable. Like a terminal disease you can treat but not cure.
