Well, for starters, you need to control an "Alien" monster to activate it. Once it is activated you select (target) from one to three opponent's monsters with A-Counters placed on them earlier. You then take control of those monsters. During the End Phase of that turn, this trap is destroyed, and if any monsters affected by this card are still under your control, they are returned to your opponent.

Basically alien monsters are monsters whos main strategy is to infest your opponent's monster with alien cells (A-counters) like the ones on their necks in the image, then trigger multiple effects that involve infested monsters, like weakening them, multiple attacks against infested monsters, summoning infested monsters to your side when you destroy then etc. Mass Hypnosis essentially lets you take control of up to 3 monsters at once that are infested as long as you control an alien, and it only works for a single turn. The counterpart to this is brainwashing beam, which takes control of a single infested monster, but for an amount of turn equal to how infested it is, so yeah, Mass Hypnosis is like a short but spread out mind control, Brainwashing beam is a focused but long control.
Arguably Mass Hypnosis is better because it can easily OHKO your opponent when you can snatch 3 powerful monsters at once, attack directly with all your monsters and even if the opponent survives, you can then sacrifice those monsters for some big bosses. Arguably it would be a broken card if only it wasn't a trap card, which means you have to wait an entire turn after setting it to activate it.
I remember running Aliens way back in high school when there was barely any cards for then and i struggled really hard to win even one match lol, Mass hypnosis was a good card when all the pieces were put into place.
